Today I’ll share my experience about “the power of having a vision“.
In my home library, I have more than a thousand of the most impactful personal and leadership development books out there, from Atomic Habits to The Richest Man in Babylon.
From this collection, I’ve chosen 26 that I read and reread frequently because they offer timeless wisdom and a constant source of inspiration.
One of these invaluable books is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. Hill’s work is a testament to the power of having a vision, and there’s a quote from the book that I want to highlight.
It goes, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” This single line has been pivotal in my life and has proven its accuracy time and again.
Let me share a personal story to illustrate this.
The Power of Having a Vision That Changed Everything
In 1997, my mother had a vision. She dreamed of moving our family to Australia — a place far from the war. She understood the importance of the power of having a vision.
A torn country of South Sudan where I was born. To give some context, I was raised in a challenging environment.
My father, a soldier, died when I was only two, leaving my mother to raise four young boys on her own.
Life was hard, and in 1993, we fled the violence and ended up in a refugee camp. Life there was summed up in five words: “A daily fight to survive.”
The camp felt like a prison. With no clear future and limited resources, everyone shared a single goal — to escape.
In the midst of this, my mother heard a rumor about a distant place called Australia, a country with a “soft spot” for single mothers with young children.
That tiny whisper of hope was all it took to get the power of having a vision in her heart, even though she had no idea how it could happen.
It took seven years of perseverance and faith, but in 2004, our family arrived in Australia.
The journey was painful and long, but my mother’s vision became reality, showing me firsthand the truth of Hill’s words: “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.”
The Importance of The Power of Having a Vision
Having a vision is powerful, even if the path forward isn’t clear from the beginning. Vision is a guide and a motivator.
It gives us something to hold on to, even in the most challenging times. As Proverbs 29:18 reminds us, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
I’ve seen the truth o f these countless times . Many people in the refugee camp lost hope, and without a vision for a better future, some even ended their lives. That’s the tragic power of life without vision.
